Thessaloniki : a gastronomic paradise

Thessaloniki, known as Salonika or Saloniki, Greece's second largest city was one of our best trip. Thessaloniki has some of the most beautiful beaches and has some of the finest hotels and best restaurants in northern Greece.

Nightlife is one of the main reasons why somenone should visit this city. There are many tavernas with live rembetika music and vast pulsating clubs. There are also many restaurants and the district of Ladadika where there are plenty of bars and cafes with music. Along the Port area, restaurants and cafes are a bit pricier, because of the view. Especially in some cafes you can experience one of the most beautiful landscapes. For some of the best views you can go in an area known as Ano Poli (for Old Town) where you can dine overlooking the whole city and port, beside ancient castle walls.

Of course we tried to taste every food of this city. One of our favorite was piroski, baked or fried puff pastries, which are packed full of potatoes, cabbage, meat or cheese. We couldn't miss Soutzoukakia from Smyrna with pita and yogurt with it . In every menu of the traditional restaurants there was tirokafteri, a spicy feta dip that is a combination of feta, spicy peppers and olive oil. For breakfast we were eating every day bougatsa ,the most popular cream-filled breakfast pastry (or late night snack) in Thessaloniki in many varieties (with cheese, meat, chocolate, spinach and cream with cinnamon.

We really enjoy our right next to the sea. The moto of this town is that life is happening in slow motion and there was something magical in the air!
