Athens: The eye of Greece

A trip to Greece can't be complete without visiting Athens first, either at the beginning or at the end of your trip. The country’s capital is one of the most different European cities. It combines unique architecture, how a neighborhood can be so different than the other, cheap prices, a busy nightlife, how alive and loud the city is and of course, history.

While in Athens you have to visit the Acropolis, the Acropolis museum and all of the archeological sites. All over the city you will encounter several others including, the Agora, the Zeus monument, Hadrian’s library, and many more.

Of course you shouldn't miss Monastiraki. It's refered to as the flea market neighborhood of Athens and it's famous for shopping, ideal for souvenirs and general shops. Though it is also one of the coolest areas to wander around spotting old buildings, walking through narrow streets, enjoying cafes, restaurants and bars, and for finding the unexpected.

Athens is very keen of nightlife too. Options to enjoy the night are endless and it’s really hard to pick one place. There are many roof gardens with exceptional view and really tasty cocktails and drinks. For those looking to experience the young Athenian nightlife scene, Exarchia is the spot for you. This neighbourhood offers the urban Athenian reality. It is increasingly talked about, for its food and arts scene, and with good reason. Last but not least, Gazi Metaxourgio and Keramikos are the best destinations for lovers of the super-club. These areas are buzzing and full of young people who can happily sit out until the early hours. Head to Bios and Blue Parrot if you’re looking for great cocktails.

Before leaving from Athens, you should definitely visit Plaka. Though it is quite commercialized it is still one of the oldest and prettiest neighborhoods in central Athens. Plaka is the location of many important museums in town including the Acropolis Museum, Athens University Museum and the Jewish Museum of Greece. Plaka is full of narrow and colorful streets, neoclassical buildings, restaurants and cafes.
